Consumer Guidelines on Memory Card Erasure
Data Security in Card Disposal and Transfer

1 Introduction

Memory cards have come into broad use by both corporations and general consumers, as the markets for products such as digital still cameras continue to expand. In its role as an industry association, JEITA continues to draw up guidelines on the proper use of memory cards, aimed at helping users understand these products and derive maximum benefit from them.
The present document addresses concerns about data security when a memory card is disposed of or passed to another party. It explains how data erased from a memory card by ordinary means may still exist in internal memory, and indicates the steps to be taken by users to avoid the security problems that can occur as a result.

The term "memory card" is used throughout to mean products like the following.
  • PC CardTM
  • CompactFlashTM
  • SmartMediaTM
  • MMC
  • Memory Stick
  • SD Memory Card
  • xD-Picture CardTM
